The Soon to Be Newest Member of the Family...

I THINK that I almost have hubs sold on getting a dog. I would like to at least have someone to take care of.. someone to go on walks with.. I think I would be a great dog mom!

Personally I'd like to have a small dog, because we don't have a huge space, plus I'd like a lap dog that would be easy and mellow.

So my question to you! What kinds of smaller dogs would you all suggest?? Personally I am leaning towards a shitzu (which I'm sure I spelt wrong) or yorkie. Or a nice mixed breed.

Any suggestions?

  1. Wellll of course I recommend adopting first of all =D and nice mixed breeds are awesome. We have 3 dachshunds and they are wonderful. Two of them are wirehaired dachshunds, and they are super-cute!

  2. I love dogs :-) We have a Westie, and I think he's great! He's small, basically doesn't shed (they're classified as non-shedders, but they do shed a little bit of hair), and they're not barkers like most Yorkies. I've also heard that they're supposed to be the best small dogs when it comes to hiking, and they're great with kids. Plus, our dog LOVES snow! We got him from a rescue, and he is definitely a part of the family.

Good luck with your search (and convincing your husband)!

  3. My old bosses have a "Puggle". Part Pug, part something else. He's smallish and pretty cool :)

  4. I looked it up. Part Pug, part Beagle. If you google Puggle you will see them, so cute!

  5. Don't get me wrong, I adore my Yorkie, but almost all small dogs are going to likely have medical issues. If you decide to go with a purebred, make sure you do some research into potential health problems so you're not surprised a bit down the road. And PLEASE make sure s/he doesn't come from a puppy mill. :(

That said. If you're looking for a cuddler, I'd go with a Yorkie or Maltese. Every Shih Tzu I have known has been a little biter!

  8. oldest has a pomeranian. I LOVE that little rat. When ever she moves out(someday) I will get another one. I am big on not having a dof that needs to be groomed. My BFF raises king charles spaniels and she wants to give me one. So maybe someday we will try that route.

  9. Well, I'm a momma to two chihuahuas... and I love them both dearly. They're excellent lap dogs and SUPER loyal. Mine we both rescue cases, so they are both good-natured, grateful dogs. But, come to think of it, it might be a tad to cold for them in Alaska. :)

Good luck in your search!! I'm sure you'll find the perfect match!!

  10. I love other people's small dogs, but would never own one myself. I call them "eagle chow". I would be really worried having them off a leash out in the country.

That being said...if I was to get a small dog, I would get a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

  11. visiting from Betty's blog (Keeper of the Skies)...

We have a toy fox terrier, who I just adore. She's so loving and cuddly, and very protective of her family. My sister has a shitzu (yep, I can't spell it either), and he has been a great dog, too. Good luck with your search!

  12. My friend has had American Eskimo dog her whole life and they are a really good dog. Really cute and great with kids. And they are small enough to be in your lap. I dont think they are really yappy and barky either. I have a Boston Terrier and I would highly reccomend but not good in cold weather at all so probably not a good bet for you. If you've seen the movie The Proposal with Sandra Bullock they have that kind of dog in the movie.

  13. We have a Shi Tzu terrier cross and he is the best, non-shedding and such a sweet (big) personality. We live on a farm with 2 big dogs, a boxer and a huntaway, so after simultaneously living with big and small - I love our little guy.

  14. We have a pomeranian and he is the sweetest little boy! I wasn't a "dog person" until I met my little guy... he is well-behaved, doesn't shed much, and he loooooves to sit in my lap. He's also great with kids, and very playful. Plus he's so damn cute! But I'm biased... :) Oh yea - poms LOOOOVE the snow! :)
