House Hunting.

I'm stalking Craiglist for houses in Fairbanks!! Stuff to rent only, because buying a house in Interior, AK, you have to break 100,000 just to get an inside bathroom and plumbing. Umm no thanks. I found this little gem today. Mind you, Very Small, NO Bathroom and has NO running water.. but it does have a certain charm don't you think?? Cozy, Waterfront, Very Bright. Chena Hot Springs Rd is a very pretty place! It would be a great little house for me and Hubs. But the potty thing is kinda a deal breaker for me.

  1. OMG. Have you ever lived anyplace like Alaska? I recently "escaped" South Lake Tahoe. I'm sure Alaska will be beautiful and maybe you'll even get to see the Northern Lights (on my to do list, for sure). Hints from one who lived with snow on the ground from October through May:
    1. Look for a house without a lot of outdoor stairs leading to the front door--they can get icy and treacherous
    2. Try to be on the sunny side of the street--it's weird but it makes a difference
    3. Unless you are REALLY into snowblowing, go for a short driveway, and
    4. It's easier to get from your car to the house or the house to the mailbox if your lot is flat and not on a slope (I can't tell you how often my neighbor--on the shady side of the street--slipped and fell while trying to maneuver her snowblower up and down her driveway which was sloped, and therefore very icy.

I'm only saying this since you're looking at houses and I want Alaska to be fun for you.

  4. Thanks for stopping by to appreciate Dave! I am holding off posting anything new so that more people are forced to look at that entry :) I could SO live in Alaska. My BF and I are semi-trying to get to Northern Michigan, which I understand is NOT the same but close enough for me :) I was obsessed with the show Men In Trees and immediately wanted to move to Elmo (which is not a real place btw). I've also wanted to live in Seattle because of Grey's Anatomy, which I think is filmed in CA :) Is it bad that I am totally let down when I discover that these places are not real cities (or Seattle Grace and The Chieftain do not exsist?)

  5. Michigan is beautiful. Unfortunately, I have always been in southern MI and the real beauty is north. Born and raised here:) I love the house btw, it is how Alaska should be :)

  10. It reminds me of my sister's house in New Hampshire. It's super cute.

But girl...No BATHROOM!!! Oh my goodness. Seriously?

I don't know if I could handle that one.

  11. As a huge fan of Northern Exposure, I love the thought of Alaska (because I'm sure it's just like that in real life). On the other hand, as a city girl who never ventures into the 'wild', the thought of no bathroom gives me a strange twitch above my right eye... :D

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  12. Mr. H & I recently watched "Mystery Alaska" a hockey movie of course but that house made me think of it! It's adorable but NO BATHROOM!!! Call me prissy but I need a potty, a sink and a place to plug in my hair dryer LOL. But to each their own, if you think you can do it, go for it! :)

  13. The view of the lake is awesome! If there is no bathroom inside, is there an outhouse? I'm confused on what the current residents do...

  14. No running water, etc? Yikes...I'm too pampered lol...I hope it "melts off" next week!!

  19. Oooo. Hope I didn't sound too grumpy when I left the post above. I was given those tips before we moved to Tahoe and I was so grateful.

Hope you're having a great weekend.

  20. Very cute- although I can't do the dry cabin thing! :) 16 mile CHSR is pretty- I know someone who lives at 17 mile. Let me know what I can do to help. I do have good friends who own several rental properties. I don't know how much "stuff" you are bringing with you, but there are some furnished apartments around town, too. We lived at The Villages (on Palace Circle off of College Road- real close to the Johansen and Walmart, etc.) the first time we moved up here and checked into it this time, but they don't take pets. I think they may have some unfurnished- and I think that most or all utilities are included. When we lived there, our cable was even included. Also- another place that would have worked for us was Yak Estates which is over in the Chena Ridge area (earthquake central the last few weeks! ). Not sure what price range you're looking at- obviously it's different for us with 6 people plus a dog! :) This summer is gonna FLY and you'll be here soon! :)

  21. No running water would be a deal breaker for me too! But then space is also a HUGE issue! SOmeone asked me if the travel trailer was big enough for our family. I couldnt stop laughing. A 3000 sq ft house ISNT big enough.Lol. But you make do with what ya got. As we tell the youngest all the time ya get what ya get and you dont throw a fit!....You are right Chena hot springs is a pretty little area.

  29. Hey there! Dropping in from SITS: you're #1! :)

Can't believe you're moving to ALASKA! I'm from Australia, but have wanted to go travelling up there for so long. House looks cute and cozy, but what's up with the loo situation?

Good luck with the house hunting :)

  30. Oh! OK! Totally get it now :) Sounds like toilets up there have the potential to be:

    a) embarrassing,
    b) hilarious, and
    c) a pain in the arse.

    Couldn't ask for more, really!

Oh, and following you now, too!

  33. Cute and Cozy..but I'm not peeing outside in the well below freezing my butt off temps, with snow drifts above my 4'11" head, and Mooses on the loose!! =) But that's just me...
